If screening results show that you are in the early stages of T1D, you may be able to participate in a prevention study.

Abatacept Prevention Study

We are testing the drug abatacept to see if it can delay or prevent progression of early stage T1D (stage 1) from progression to stage 2, and ultimately prevent clinical diagnosis (stage 3).

Study Details Now Enrolling

Abatacept effects the autoimmune response that can result in the progression of type 1 diabetes.

Known by the brand Orencia®, abatacept is approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administation (FDA) for use in several autoimmune diseases in adults and children as young as 6. Abatacept is also being studied for treatment of five other autoimmune diseases (Crohn’s, Multiple Sclerosis, Lupus, Arthritis and Psoriasis).

In an earlier TrialNet study for people newly diagnosed, those who took abatacept showed 59% higher insulin production and prolonged insulin production. Improved insulin production helps prevent complications and improve disease management, including better control of blood sugar levels.

Based on these promising results, we are now testing abatacept in people in Stage 1 T1D. Our goal is to prevent further progression and T1D diagnosis (Stage 3).

As with any medical intervention, there are risks and benefits to participating in this study. Before you decide to participate, a member of our research team will explain all potential risks and benefits and answer any questions you may have.

Who Can Participate

To find out if this study is right for you, the first step is to sign up for T1D risk screening. Based on your screen results, you may be eligibile for this study.

Those interested in the Abatacept Prevention Study must meet the following criteria:*

  • Participants must be between the ages of 6 and 45 years old.
  • Have two or more diabetes-relatd autoantibodies, excluding MIAA autoantibody (determined by screening).
  • Have normal results on an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT).
  • NOT have had a “live” vaccine in the past 3 months.
  • NOT be pregnant or planning to be pregnant.

Screening Options

T1D risk screening is a simple blood draw. And with a variety of options for your convenience, participation is easy.

Additionally, T1D risk screening opportunities are available at a number of T1D community events in your region. Participant Experience

T1D risk screening will detect if you are in the early stages of T1D. Nearly all people that test positive for two or more diabetes-related autoantibodies will develop the disease.

Understanding your results

Negative: Lower Risk No AutoAntibody

Negative results indicate that no diabetes-related autoantibodies (AAB) are detected. Individuals are deemed to be at lower risk.

What it means:

While you are determined to currently be at lower risk, this does not guarantee that you will never develop diabetes.

Next Steps:

Children that test negative are encouraged to get rescreened annually until they reach age 19. TrialNet will send a reminder for your next yearly screening.

Positive: High Risk One Aab

Participants that are found to have one autoantibody (AAB) may be at a higher risk for T1D.

What it means:

Those with one autoantibody are at a higher risk than others for developing T1D in their lifetime.

Next Steps:

Depending on your results, you may be eligible to join a prevention study or be closely monitored.

Positive: Early Stage T1DTwo Or More AAB

Participants that have two or more autoantibodies (AAB) are in the early stages of T1D.

What it means:

All individuals identified to have two or more AAB are in the early stages of T1D.

You will be asked to schedule a follow-up consultation to discuss options. TrialNet will answer your questions and provide you with the information you need to make a well-informed decision for your future.
